Position Title Project Archaeologist

Position Summary The Project Archaeologist is responsible for archaeological research and reporting,

daily management of assigned archaeological projects, and assisting the Director in the preparation of grant and contract proposals and marketing. The work requires substantial experience in the general disciplines of archaeology and cultural resources management, familiarity with the cultural history and material culture of the Mid-Atlantic region, and knowledge of specific regulations and guidelines for conducting cultural resources research in Virginia. This is one of the key positions the Center, requiring an individual to supervise crews of employees assisting with archaeological fieldwork, delegate research support tasks as needed, and work with minimal daily supervision.

Required Qualifications 1. MA in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field.

2. Significant experience directly applicable to the duties. 3. Direct supervisory experience required. 4. Working knowledge of federal and state guidelines for conducting archaeological survey, evaluation, and data recovery projects. 5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 6. Ability to direct multiple projects at the same time. Strong organizational skills. Ability to make quick decisions. 7. Broad knowledge of the prehistory and history of Virginia and the larger Middle Atlantic region. 8. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to maintain diplomatic relations with a wide variety of personalities, clients, regulators, scholars, and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications 1. Experience in the preparation of work plans, data recovery plans, technical

reports, and proposals/budgets. 2. Record of research, including publications.

Advertised Pay Range Starting salary commensurate with experience.

Conditions of Employment: 1. Frequent out-of-town travel during regular work week, and very occasional outof- town travel on weekends. 2. Occasional public outreach on preservation issues and stewardship of archaeological resources, and occasional presentation of papers and attendance at conferences. 3. This is a restricted position subject to availability of funding.
