From Thursday October 1st to Wednesday October 7th any institution of higher learning may post an academic teaching position for free. From October 8th-31st any institution may pay a flat fee of $100 and post as many individual ads for positions open in their system. NOTE: This does not apply to any institution position that is a CRM position unless over 50% of that position is a teaching capacity.
Why ShovelBums? I thought that was for my undergrad archaeology students and Masters students in the summer?
Nope. Where do you think so many of you best and brightest ended up after they graduate? We all recognize that Archaeology and Anthropology are an academic pyramid scheme of sorts. Every year 100⒠s of institutions all around the world produce numerous exceptionally bright and well educated graduates who quickly learn that breaking into academia is a tough gig. So what happens to these former students? Yes there is some attrition, but most want to hoe the row closest to what they always loved and they move into CRM or a related profession. Two things happen at that point:
1: These former students become experts on ideas, concepts and sometimes new regions they were never exposed to in graduate school,
2: The real world does not follow an academic calendar and after a few years they lose sight of the window of when to be checking out academic jobs on the myriad web sites.
Then, for some, a third thing happens. These students grow up an mature and lose some of the hubris the protected walls of academia allowed them to develop and they become better people and better potential instructors. The best thing? Sometimes people matriculate without an interest in teaching and move directly into the private sector, but after ~10 years they have an awakening and realize they have a gift for education. You might find that right in your backyard is an exceptional educator with a wealth of real world experience they can bring to your campus. Someone who otherwise would never be checking the academic websites for postings.
So who can you reach via ShovelBums? With a distribution list of over 17,000 professionals and a high traffic website and social media presence there is nothing, and I mean nothing, like ShovelBums in the entire world. ShovelBums has professionals from every level of every discipline you can imagine on the list, and if someone is not on the list, they have a friend who is who knows their skill set. By my calculations ShovelBums is the only resource that is within two degrees of every archaeologist or anthropologist in the world. And with the speed and convenience of email and social media if the ultimate candidate that you are looking for is not on the list, their friend who is will send them the announcement immediately.
Professionals like ShovelBums because it is low volume (relative to other mailing lists), very narrow focused, and allows anyone to keep their thumb on the pulse of what is happening in archaeology and CRM around the world. So if you are looking for a candidate in archaeology, anthropology, geography, or any related field try ShovelBums.
