DESCRIPTION

The Archaeology Technician will work on-site at the customer’s facility at Fort Irwin, CA to provide cultural resource management, compliance, and consultation services. The candidate will augment existing customer capabilities, work in a team framework, and provide field support for Fort Irwin’s Cultural Resources Program. Primary duties include the following:

  • Conduct surveys prior to approval of dig permit and construction requests to ensure protection of significant cultural, historical or paleontological resources

  • Conduct off-limits archaeological site monitoring

  • Input archaeological data across several databases

  • Contribute to a variety of survey and inventory reports and consultation packages to SHPO and Native American tribes

  • Assist with curation of archival materials in Fort Irwin’s Curation Facility

  • Conduct or assist with outreach briefings and events to promote cultural resources awareness

 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • BA in Anthropology or an equivalent degree with an emphasis in archaeology
  • Must have completed a degree that included three semester hours in EACH of the following course areas:
    • History of Archaeology
    • Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America
    • Regional Archaeology, Archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area such as the Mojave Desert or Great Basin to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development
    • Theory and methods of Archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, and analytical techniques

                Six semester hours of related course work in:

  • Geography, Geology, or Cultural Geography;
  • History, Historiography, or Historical Archaeology;
  • Environmental studies;
  • Scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
  • Surveying.
  • AND Completion of an archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work in North America
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience in Archaeological survey, monitoring, and/or excavation
  • Must possess a valid state Driver’s License
  • Must be able to work in extreme climatic conditions, be able to walk long distances over uneven and steep terrain, bend and lift field equipment loads up to 30 lbs. and work with minimal supervision.
  • Well-developed verbal and technical report writing skills
  • Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of ArcPad and ArcGIS computer software

 

Preferred experience:

•   Experience working with Federal Agencies including the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of the Interior (DOI) and/or the Department of Agriculture (DOA).

•   Field experience in the California deserts or Great Basin area is highly desirable

•   Ability to work outdoors in a wide range of desert weather conditions

•   Experience navigating and collecting data using GPS technology and topographic map with compass
