Working collaboratively with the USFS Ruby Mountains Ranger District,
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (HTNF), the Great Basin Institute is
recruiting to hire an Archaeology Crew Chief to facilitate a variety of
activities relating to the district�⒠�s land management plan. As part of the
analysis required by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and by
the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for undertakings on federally
managed lands, a Section 106 of NHPA cultural resource investigation must
be completed to evaluate effects to historic and prehistoric sites on
federally managed lands. In order to complete the cultural resource
reports, surveys for archaeological resources are completed for all
proposed projects.
A single project entitled the Overland Pass Habitat Improvement Project
will be the primary focus of this scope of work. The project entails a
variety of work experiences including pre-field background research,
archaeological survey, site monitoring, report writing, database management
and record keeping. All new sites will be documented on site records,
photographed, mapped and illustrated as needed. Previously recorded sites
will have new site records completed if needed. The Crew Chief will support
and manage a crew of two AmeriCorps Archaeology Field Technicians. The crew
will conduct Section 106 surveys on approximately 8,700 acres. About 6,900
acres of the treatment area will require Class III intensive cultural
resource survey using 30-meter transect spacing while another 1,770 acres
will require cultural survey of reduced intensity using 100-meter transect
spacing. The crew will assist a Forest Service Archeologist out of the
Elko, Nevada district office in completing this project.
Compensation and Timeline:
�⒠� Rate of Pay: $18.00/hour with field per diem for nights spent field
camping
�⒠� Paid personal leave, holidays and limited health benefits provided
�⒠� April 18, 2016-October 28, 2016, or upon availability
Location:
The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (H-T) is comprised of over 6 million
acres, which makes it the largest National Forest in the lower 48 states,
and is located throughout the state of Nevada and a small portion of
eastern California. Many habitats and ecosystems exist within the H-T:
sparkling mountain streams and glacial lakes, the high elevation desert of
the Great Basin, flower-filled meadows, and snow-covered mountain peaks.
The duty station for this project is the U.S. Forest Service office located
at 2035 Last Chance Road, Elko, NV 89801.
Qualifications:
�⒠� Educational experience with a degree focused on archeology, anthropology,
or indigenous peoples studies; applicants with advanced degrees encouraged
to apply;
�⒠� Ability to teach and guide use of Trimble units with ArcPad or TerraSync,
and ArcGIS sufficient for mapping surveys and sites to standards recognized
by Nevada SHPO and the HTNF;
�⒠� Possesses background archaeological knowledge of the Great Basin;
�⒠� Recognizes common artifact types in the central/eastern Great Basin;
�⒠� Sufficient archaeological knowledge (regional, local and general) to make
recommendations of eligibility and project effect;
�⒠� Ability or willingness to learn how to properly use databases and guide
technicians;
�⒠� Lead author of summary reports, using previously created contexts;
�⒠� Adapts standard field survey methods and strategies to local conditions;
�⒠� Lead research of existing data, including GIS data, Government Land
Office plats, historic maps, archaeological surveys and site data prior to
fieldwork;
�⒠� Apply regional and local archaeological and historical data for a
framework to collect data;
�⒠� Responsible for facilitating tailgate safety discussions and records, as
well as maintaining and providing planning information for emergency
medical evacuations;
�⒠� Possess interpersonal skills required to lead crews, manage risk, and
maintain crew productivity;
�⒠� Must be able to camp in and work out of remote locations for up to eight
days per session for the project;
�⒠� Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver�⒠�s license with the ability to
operate a 4WD vehicle on- or off-road if required; and
�⒠� Successful applicant(s) must complete an AmeriCorps National Service
Criminal History Check (NSCHC) prior to working independently with

Description:
The Great Basin Institute, a Reno-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is

�⒠� This is an AmeriCorps position, and members will receive a living stipend
of $10,846.80. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to
members bi-weekly throughout their term of service. Upon completion of the
25-week AmeriCorps term of service members shall receive a Segal AmeriCorps
Education Award valued at $2,865 that can be used to pay off qualified
student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college or
program.

�⒠� Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct
archaeological site surveys, including:
�⒠� Sketching a site map to scale;
�⒠� Recording on standard site form (experience with IMACS helpful);
�⒠� Photographing and using a photo log;
�⒠� Using GPS (Trimble) equipment proficiently to record artifact and feature
locations, as well as site boundaries;
�⒠� Figuring out location and routes into and out of project areas; and
�⒠� Drawing artifacts or structures as needed.
�⒠� Experience working in the Great Basin, desirable;
�⒠� Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and
electronic field data loggers;
�⒠� Experience with ESRI�® ArcMap 10, desirable;
�⒠� Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented;
�⒠� Good verbal communication and writing skills that reflect critical
thinking;
�⒠� Timeliness and professionalism when conducting work assignments based
upon established standards and timelines;
�⒠� Self-motivated with ability to maintain a positive and professional
attitude while working in harsh and rapidly changing environments, camping
in the backcountry for consecutive days, working in all types of weather
conditions, and traversing uneven terrain, and be in overall good physical
condition;
�⒠� Practice safe behavior, in both field and office settings, in accordance
with established procedures;
�⒠� Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver�⒠�s license with the ability to
operate a 4WD vehicle on- or off-road, if required; and
�⒠� Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal
resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education
Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time
