Cultural Resource Field Technician


AmeriCorps Member(s) will provide national service at Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Supervisor�⒠�s Office, a host site for Great Basin Institute�⒠�s AmeriCorps Program.
The Great Basin Institute, a Reno-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is hiring one (1) Cultural Resource Field Technician to join our AmeriCorps Intern Program. The focus of this cultural resource internship will be to aid current GBI Archaeological field staff with field surveys and the preparation of site records. Field and office work will be focused on Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest with particular focus on survey of bi-state sage grouse habitat and Abandoned Mine Lands (AMLs). In accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), cultural resource investigation must be completed to evaluate effects to historic and prehistoric sites on federally managed lands. Through this professional development opportunity, the Technician(s) will assist with site forms; collecting and cataloging field data; photographs, and narrative data to ensure that field data relationships are catalogued, maintained, and entered into appropriate databases. All new sites will be documented on IMACS site records, photographed, mapped and illustrated as needed. Previously recorded sites will have new site records completed if needed. AML related work does not require the evaluation of sites for recommendation to the NRHP as a programmatic agreement (PA) exists to leave AML features unevaluated.� 
Compensation and Timeline: � 
�⒠� This is an AmeriCorps position, and members will receive a living stipend of $8,280. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members bi-weekly throughout their term of service. Upon completion of the 19-week AmeriCorps term of service members shall receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award valued at $2,182 that can be used to pay off qualified student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college or program.

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (H-T) is comprised of over 6 million acres, which makes it the largest National Forest in the lower 48 states, and is located throughout the state of Nevada and a small portion of eastern California. Many habitats and ecosystems exist within the boundaries of these two districts: sparking mountain streams and glacial lakes, the high elevation desert of the Great Basin, flower-filled meadows, and snow-covered mountain peaks. The duty station for these positions is the Forest Supervisor�⒠�s Office located in Sparks, NV.
�⒠� Educational experience with a degree/coursework focused on archeology, anthropology, indigenous peoples studies, or related field;
�⒠� Ability to utilize and navigate using a handheld GPS unit, topographic maps and compass, and/or aerial photographs;
�⒠� Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct archaeological site surveys, and collecting and recording field data;
�⒠� Physically capable of working in remote locations including rough, uneven terrain with heavy vegetative cover, rapidly changing environmental conditions, and ability to walk a minimum of 12km/day;
�⒠� Organizational and time management skills to effectively complete assigned workload within defined timelines and in accordance with established standards;
�⒠� Ability to effectively communicate to a diverse audience including co-workers, members of the pubic, and agency personnel;� 
�⒠� Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, with ability to manually enter and provide quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) of data;� 
�⒠� Self-motivated with ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude while working in harsh conditions and/or a diverse team environment;
�⒠� Practice safe behavior, in both field and office settings, in accordance with established procedures;
�⒠� Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver�⒠�s license with the ability to operate a 4WD vehicle on- or off-road, if required; and
�⒠� Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) will not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
