Cultural Resource Senior Field Technician

 

 

The Great Basin Institute, a Reno-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is hiring one Senior Field Technician, to focus on cultural resource survey and preparation of site records. Field and office work will be focused on Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest managed lands primarily within the Bridgeport and Carson Ranger Districts related to the Four Mile Hill and Rough Creek Landscape Habitat Improvement Project. In accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), cultural resource investigation must be completed to evaluate effects to historic and prehistoric sites on federally managed lands. As such, the Technicians will assist with site forms; collecting and cataloging field data; simple trowel or shovel tests; as well as coding sheets, slides, photographs, and narrative data to ensure that field data relationships are catalogued, maintained, and entered into appropriate databases. All new sites will be documented on site records, photographed, mapped and illustrated as needed. Previously recorded sites will have new site records completed if needed.� 
 
 
Compensation and Timeline: � 
�⒠� Hourly Rate of Pay: $17.00
�⒠� Timeline: Position starts as soon as qualified candidate is identified (June 2016) and goes through November 15, 2016 with possibility for extension pending funding availability and positive performance review.
�⒠� Full-time, up to 40 hours per week
 
 
Location:
The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (H-T) is comprised of over 6 million acres, which makes it the largest National Forest in the lower 48 states, and is located throughout the state of Nevada and a small portion of eastern California. Project areas occur on lands managed by the Bridgeport Ranger District and occur in both Lyon and Mineral Counties, Nevada. The Bridgeport Ranger District encompasses over one million acres making it one of the largest districts in the National Forest Service system. Many habitats and ecosystems exist within the boundaries of these two districts: sparking mountain streams and glacial lakes, the high elevation desert of the Great Basin, flower-filled meadows, and snow-covered mountain peaks. The duty station for these positions is the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Supervisor�⒠�s Office located in Sparks, NV.

Qualifications:
�⒠� Educational experience with a degree focused on archeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies;
�⒠� Ability to utilize and navigate using aerial photographs, topographic maps and compass, as well as using a handheld GPS unit;
�⒠� Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct archaeological site surveys, including:
1. Sketching a site map to scale,� 
2. Recording on standard site form (experience with IMACS helpful),
3. Photographing and using a photo log,
4. Using GPS (Trimble) equipment proficiently to record artifact and feature locations, as well as site boundaries,
5. Figuring out location and routes into and out of project areas, and
6. Drawing artifacts or structures as needed.
�⒠� Artifact identification and age/use interpretation;
�⒠� Experience in collecting and recording field data; and
�⒠� Ability to utilize computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Access or Excel and ArcGIS to input field data and produce graphs/data tables, maps, shapefiles, etc. for inclusion in project reports.
�⒠� Physically capable of working in remote locations including rough, uneven terrain with heavy vegetative cover, rapidly changing environmental conditions, and ability to walk a minimum of 12km/day;
�⒠� Organizational and time management skills to effectively complete assigned workload within defined timelines and in accordance with established standards;
�⒠� Ability to effectively communicate to a diverse audience including co-workers, members of the pubic, and agency personnel;� 
�⒠� Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, with ability to manually enter and provide quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) of data;� 
�⒠� Self-motivated with ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude while working in harsh conditions and/or a diverse team environment;
�⒠� Practice safe behavior, in both field and office settings, in accordance with established procedures; and
�⒠� Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver�⒠�s license with the ability to operate a 4WD vehicle on- or off-road, if required.
