ShovelBums sent out its 10,000th posting today.

ShovelBums sent out its 10,000th job posting today. This is exactly seventeen years and eight months since the very first job posting was submitted on April 30, 1999 by Susan E Butler for a Berger job (below). It is interesting to note that there is no email address provided in the ad, you were supposed to either mail or fax in your vita.

It would be another seven days before ShovelBums LLC reached it's first milestone - 200 members. ShovelBums then reached 1,000 members in February 2000 and today there are 17,917 members (I was kinda hoping it would hit 18,000 this year, but that gives me something else to look forward too :-). It is amazing to look back at the first 100 postings before I switched the list to being moderated, it was a complete cluster and amazing anyone continued to join! But then ShovelBums hit it's groove and here we are today! I estimate ~40,000 positions have been advertised through ShovelBums, and the feedback from the users is that most of those positions have been filled because of their ads on ShovelBums.

I know 10,000 is nothing more than a number, but it is at least a touchstone to give me a reason to sit back and contemplate my,...our, time with ShovelBums. 17 years ago I could not imagine this day in any meaningful way so I cannot yet imagine where we all be 17 years from now. But I am hopeful we will all persevere.

Thank you, sincerely, for having made ShovelBums everything it is today. It would never have been possible if it was not for your ongoing collective effort in getting the word out there about ShovelBums. And to those early adopters, many thanks for toughing out those rough early days :-)  Ditto for anyone who has ever volunteered over the years to help moderate these messages. And last, my genuine thanks to the "Pocket_Gophers" at the University of Arkansas, my masters student peers who were the very first to join and help to get the word out about ShovelBums.

I might write up something a bit more reflective this coming week, but I have to say, this is a pretty neat way to wind up 2016! Feel free to virtually buy me a beer (no-one has for months! lol!) at (or send a paypal to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if you have ever found a job through ShovelBums, that was always the original deal ;-)

Have a happy and safe New Years my friends! I do not know what 2017 will bring, but together, we will make the most of it.
