ANT 495--CSUDH APPLIED ARCHAEOLOGY FIELD SCHOOL (JUNE 13 – JULY 3, 2010) LOCATION: THE NANCY PATERSON ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE, BLANDING, UTAH Instructor: Daniel A. Cutrone, Adjunct Professor, CSU Dominguez Hills: Daniel Cutrone (MA, 2006) has been the Principal Investigator at the Nancy Patterson Site since 1994, and he has devoted most of his adult life to investigations of the Montezuma Canyon region. Trained as a geologist and anthropological archaeologist, Cutrone has a broad background in university teaching. Through his research presented in professional conferences and scientific papers, Cutrone has introduced new sites and theories to Southwestern archaeology. Course Description: This course is designed to introduce undergraduates to archaeological methods and techniques and to the multiple domains of heritage management at the Nancy Patterson site in southeastern Utah. Located in the southern entrance to Montezuma Canyon, the Nancy Patterson site represents an isolated microcosm in American history with a full and continual archaeological record over the last 900 years. Including both historic and prehistoric components the site spans the developments of cultural groups and social interactions within the greater Four Corners region. Course Objectives: Students will be introduced to Southwestern archaeology and environmental sciences relating to understanding the past human activities at the Nancy Patterson site. Students will be learn methods of site recording, excavation methods, and laboratory techniques. Specific topics covered include ceramic and lithic artifact analyses, Ancestral Puebloan architecture and settlement patterns, the social and religious aspects related to sacred landscape, site conservation, and heritage management legislation. Field instruction will be supplemented with evening lectures and student presentations. Cost: a) Food and lodging 1275 b) Tuition (3 semester units) 675 c) Student insurance 30 TOTAL 1980 Lodging: Accommodations will be in Blanding, Utah. Lodging will be double-occupancy in hotel rooms. Breakfast and dinner are included in the costs. Lunch will be students’ own responsibility. Transportation: Students are responsible for their own transportation to Blanding, Utah and daily from Blanding to the site, a distance of less than 30 miles on paved roads.
