Archaeological Field Technician

POSITION

An Archaeological Field Technician (hourly/seasonal) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is located at Fort Drum, New York. 

 

ORGANIZATION

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

LOCATION

Fort Drum is a United States Army installation in northern New York, 10 miles northeast of Watertown, near Lake Ontario, the Adirondack Park, the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River, and approximately 30 miles from the Canadian border. Fort Drum covers over 107,000 acres, and is the largest employer in northern New York.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Work will include shovel testing, pedestrian surveying, test unit excavating, record keeping, mapping, photography, artifact processing, and data entry. The majority of the work will be spent in the field; additional work will be completed in an office setting.  Crew may also be asked to participate in public outreach activitiea and field trips. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS

Applicants should be in good physical condition, willing to work 10 hour days in various weather conditions and come prepared for various conditions including heat, insects, brush, swamps and challenging terrain.  Crew will be expected to carry any personal gear as well as a screen and/or shovel or test unit excavation equipment in the field.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. At least 1 college level course in archaeology, anthropology or related field is preferred. Experience in fieldwork (i.e. a field school or educational excavation is also helpful.  Ability to have or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license is preferred.  A valid driver’s license or some form of US government issued identification (passport, military ID, etc.) is required in order to access the installation.

 

 

 

BACKGROUND CHECK

An additional background and DMV check will be performed by the Fort Drum Directorate of Emergency Services prior to the individual being allowed access to the Installation.  Employment will be contingent on the individual being granted access and being able to operate a motor vehicle on the Installation.

 

SALARY

Pay rate is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Continuation of the position is dependent on the receipt of funding from the sponsor for Archaeological Field Technician efforts at Fort Drum, New York.

 

SCHEDULE AND HOUSING

Field crew will be working in the field on an active military installation. Work will be scheduled for 4 10-hour days (7am-5:30pm), Monday-Thursday; work on Fridays may be available if there is a holiday or bad weather. Up to forty hours per week is available; compensation for sick leave or additional leave is not available. Start and end dates are flexible and work will be at least 10-12 weeks with a full crew. Housing and dining are not included; however, rental housing can be found in Watertown in one of the surrounding villages (Theresa, Philadelphia, Great Bend, Clayton, Sackets Harbor, etc).
