The successful archaeological crew chief candidate would become part of a dynamic central Texas cultural and environmental resources planning team that enjoys excellent relationships with a wide range of local, regional, and state agencies, as well as private and nonprofit clients.


Our Austin office is looking to expand our Cultural Resources team to meet future and current project demands. This is a temporary, part-time, crew chief position with project work located within Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee. The staff member will be assisting the Field Directors in completion of Phase I cultural resource survey efforts. Applicant(s) should be able to work for 40 or more hours per week on a sometimes unpredictable and/or fluid schedule.

Supervising and leading a field crew while conducting archaeological fieldwork including Phase I cultural resource survey and potentially Phase II National Register evaluative testing, Phase III data recovery, and monitoring. Communicating with Field Directors, Project Managers, and GIS staff through regular, scheduled field status reports. Participating in technical research and writing and data QA/QC for reporting efforts. Use of topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to carry out required job functions. Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units. 


Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field required

A minimum of two (2) years of experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring required; experience in Oklahoma, Arkansas, or Tennessee preferred

An accredited Field School Certification is required

Previous field supervisory experience required 

Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, back country roads required

Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
