Description:
Working cooperatively with the National Park Service�⒠�s Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE), Parashant National Monument (PARA) and Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument (TUSK), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting to hire an Archaeological Technician to join our AmeriCorps program. Through direct mentorship by NPS cultural staff, the Technician will gain tremendous insight and experience with how a federal land management agency operates and implements cultural resource projects. The Technician will assist with archaeological field work, museum work, lab analysis, and data processing throughout the Parks.

Field work includes surveying for cultural resources, recording and documenting cultural resources, and testing and excavation of archaeological sites. Museum work will include accessioning and cataloging of museum objects and archives, maintaining museum records, and other miscellaneous tasks associated with the museum collections. Lab analysis and data processing duties include analysis and cataloging of artifacts, updating of databases, and filling out site forms in support of SHPO and NHPA reporting requirements. Museum and lab work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required, as well as lifting and moving of heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more. Completing archaeological surveys in the southwest requires the physical endurance to walk over a variety of terrains and in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat. Overnight camping for up to a week at a time in remote backcountry areas is required.

Timeline:�
o� Annual appointment beginning April 2016, or upon availability, and completion of Department of Interior background investigation

Qualifications:
Required:
- Educational and field experiences related to archaeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies;
- Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, camp in the backcountry for consecutive days, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and be in overall good physical condition;
- Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals and communicate effectively with a diverse public;
- Ability to use Microsoft Office programs, specifically Access and Excel;
- Posses a valid, state-issued driver�⒠�s license and clean driving record; and
- Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of two in a lifetime, regardless of award amount), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.
Helpful but not required:
- Knowledge of historic and/or prehistoric history and artifacts of the Mojave desert regions of the southwest;
- Read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass;
- Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and electronic field data collection;
- Experience using ArcGIS
- Experience driving 4WD vehicles on paved and un-paved roads;
- Posses good organizational skills and be detail oriented; and
- Experience working in the desert southwest, or similar desert climates.
