Longwood University invites applications for Field Technicians/ Archaeologists- On Call in the Institute of Archaeology.  The successful candidates will be responsible for conducting archaeological excavations and historic structure assessments in rural, suburban, and urban environments, under the direction of the Field Supervisor. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

�·       Assist Archaeological Field Supervisor with all facets of archaeological excavations and historic structure assessments

�·       Interpretation of soil horizons, preparation of field maps depicting the locations of excavations, site/feature boundaries, historic standing structures, and other notable features within the project area 

�·       Assist with the photography of current field conditions, archaeological sites/features, historic standing structures, and other notable features within the project area

�·       Artifact processing

�·       Some duties require an employee to safely lift 50 pounds

�·       Some duties require walking to project sites over a variety of different terrains in all kinds of weather and standing or walking for long periods of time

 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

�·       Must have a Bachelor�⒠�s degree in archaeology or anthropology from an accredited school or a closely related field with equivalent work experience

�·       Experience processing, labeling and curating artifacts

�·       Working knowledge of Native American and Historic time periods in the Middle Atlantic Region 

�·       Basic understanding of pedology and orienteering;

�·       Ability to identify prehistoric and historic artifacts

�·       Ability to work alone or with others and adapt to changing field conditions/methodologies  

�·       Excellent communication skills

�·       Familiarity with cultural resource regulations in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and Delaware preferred. 

�·       Must meet Longwood University criteria for driving institution-owned vehicles

 

 

Pay Band 3.  On-call Field Technicians will be needed for a variety of field projects. Field Projects will typically have a duration of two-three months with a work week of 40 hours. Limited to working 1500 hours in a work year. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits do not accompany this position.  A successful criminal background check is required.  Position will be posted a minimum of five days.  Review of applications will begin immediately.
