*Description:*


Working cooperatively with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Redding
Field Office (FO), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting a Cultural
Resources Technician to assist BLM resource specialists with on-the-ground
field studies to identify cultural, historical, and/or paleontological
resources. Work may involve designing and conducting inventories; compiling
and interpreting collected data; researching reference materials; writing
reports on inventory activities; or preparing documents for determination
of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. Most work will
be done under the guidance of the BLM resource specialist, but some work
may be carried out independently. Project work will also include assisting
with researching, organizing, and salvaging existing BLM legacy data,
including digital material and hard media; and assisting with planning,
coordination, and development of outreach projects and volunteer programs.






Some work is performed in an outdoor environment that ranges from very cold
and wet to very hot and dry. This work may require physical exertion over
very steep, wet, muddy, slippery, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; and also
may include bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and similar
activities. Overnight camping for several days at a time in remote areas
may occasionally be required.






*Compensation and Timeline: *


- Rate of Pay: $16.00/hour
- Health benefits (medical, dental, vision)


o 6-month appointment beginning in June 2017, or upon availability, and
pending completion of DOI Background Investigation


o Full time, 40 hours/week; some weekend work may be required






*Location:*


The BLM Redding Field Office is located in the northern BLM Northern CA
District in the vicinity of many outdoor recreation opportunities,
including fishing, mountain biking, hiking/backpacking, and
skiing/snowboarding. Redding is located between Shasta-Trinity and Lassen
National Forests and is on the I-5 corridor, making points in Oregon and
central/southern California easily accessible.






*Qualifications:*


- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related
field and/or archaeology coursework and field experience; applicants with
advanced degrees are encouraged to apply;
- Knowledge of historic and/or prehistoric cultural resources of
northern California;
- Ability to understand, implement and adhere to established data
collection, inventory and monitoring protocols;
- Experience in performing archaeological surveys, inventories and
assessments;
- Capacity to collect and maintain field data in an organized manner
that is easily understood and accessible to other resources staff (GBI or
BLM);
- Experience completing site forms (or portions of site forms) and/or
entering site form data into database programs;
- Ability to utilize ArcGIS software to build maps, organize and manage
data, and manipulate data layers;
- Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and
electronic field data collection; experience post-processing field data I s
desired;
- Ability to read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a
compass;
- Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to
safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads;
- Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team
focused on accomplishing mutual goals and communicate effectively, both
written and orally, with a diverse audience;
- Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented;
- Experience in outreach programming and volunteer coordination
preferred; and
- Ability to work in challenging environmental conditions, camp in the
backcountry for consecutive days, work in all types of weather conditions,
traverse uneven terrain, and perform required physical activities.
- Successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI)
Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources
indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed
