Job Description and Duties
ASSOCIATE STATE ARCHEOLOGIST ($4,768 - $5,924) – BAY AREA DISTRICT / DISTRICT OFFICE

The reporting location for this position is the Bay Area District Office, 845 Casa Grande Rd., Petaluma, CA. This position will work under the direction of the District Superintendent.

The Associate State Archeologist manages the cultural resource program for the District.The position will plan, manage and conduct or facilitate archeological excavation and survey projects and will serve as direct project lead to seasonal cultural resources staff, volunteers and interns.

Position assists staff in designing projects that will not impact archeological features.The position reviews Project Evaluation Forms for compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), Public Resources Code Section 5024, Executive Order W-26-92 and, when necessary, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and provides recommendations when potential impacts may threaten historic or prehistoric archeological sites or features. This position curates the District’s cultural resource files and archeological collections, prepares annual reviews and revisions for the Cultural Resource Program, compiles unit inventories, and reviews research data to identify archeological significance.

The archeologist will serve as the District Tribal Liaison within the Native American Community, meeting regularly and building relations of trust with tribes by insuring that tribal concerns are brought forward and addressed.
